Fire crews battled a blaze at a residence on the corner of River and Pearl Street. The flames, reported early evening, caused damage to the structure with no immediate word on injuries or cause. Local authorities closed the area briefly for investigation and safety.
A morning fire at a corner residence caused about 2100 loss. A four year old boy, Ralph Leighty, was badly burned when his night clothes touched matches left accessible by his sister Vera. Doctors report he faces a serious recovery with third degree burns on his upper arms and chest.
Town officials in Urbandale report extensive damage from a blaze and flood that forced hundreds from their homes. Knox Indiana June 3 The jury trying Cecil Burkett aged 11 for the killing of Benny Slavin aged 7 was discharged by the Circuit Court judge after failing to reach a verdict.

Springfield June 8 Governor Smell redesigns the Jace and Greene bills to rename two State Normal schools. Macomb will become the Western Illinois State Teachers College and Charleston the Eastern Illinois State Teachers College.
Springfield June 3 Indignant lawmakers discuss a plan to expel Representative McCaskrin over charges that the Holliday road refund bill passed through a conspiracy. McCaskrin seeks a injunction to stop state payments of refunds to counties for hard roads, naming Holliday as co conspirator. A resolution to expel the Rock Island legislator was prepared but delayed.
Washington June report on the House Foreign Affairs Committee where Democratic members dissenting vote to report the Porter resolution for termination of the State of war between the United States and Germany and Austro-Hungary.
London June 3 The executive body of the striking coal miners rejected the government proposal for settlement of the coal strike after prolonged talks.
Washington reports negotiations between marine workers and the shipping board over wages and conditions have collapsed. W. S. Brown of the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association announced the breakdown. A separate note mentions Mrs. Vaughn Cobb and her son leaving for Indianola Iowa after visiting Frank Duncan and relatives in town.
