A massive flood has claimed up to 3,000 lives and prompted authorities to reschedule public events. Amid the calamity, organizers announce a carnival in the city to lift spirits and aid relief efforts.
A community carnival planned for Tuesday night features a professional show by Syn with a summer carnival theme at the Shoe Factory square. Admission is affordable and offerings include food, music by a ten piece jazz group, and free entertainment for county residents.
City councilors hear a proposal to transform Chandler park into a central public square with a new city hall at its heart. Plans include widening around the park to match the courthouse square and the potential sale of the current city building. The idea is in early discussion and may reach formal consideration. County Clerk Norton reports unusually large potatoes planted February 15 with vines well filled.
George McHenry reports details of Jesse McHenry's death near West Liberty Indiana. Jesse fell from a bridge into a creek, drowned, body submerged ten days as clothing snagged on a submerged limb. Search efforts used dynamite but failed to locate him until last Sunday. Funeral held Monday. He leaves three daughters and three brothers George Macomb Illinois Robert Montana and JD McHenry Nebraska. He was 78 and longtime resident of Seiota Iowa.
Daniel Chapman denies any enemy or vengeance motive behind the early Friday morning fire that destroyed his unoccupied Pearl and East Wheeler house. He praises neighbors and firemen for saving the home and says he knows no more about the cause than others. The By-Stander also corrects a report claiming a secret marriage between Jesse Raymond and Miss Mary Jones.
The murdered body of Mary Barbara Thorndale 24 a school teacher missing since Thursday was found by Boy Scouts aiding authorities. It was located under a bush near Valley Junction a Des Moines suburb.
A party of masked men boarded the shipping board steamer Mitchell at Tampton Roads, injuring eight crew members seriously and several others lightly. A naval detachment responded, but the attackers escaped before help arrived.
Chairman Volstead of the House Judiciary committee announced he would ask the rules committee early next week to grant right of way to the beer bill so it could be called up for immediate consideration. If the bill follows its normal path it likely would not pass this session.
John Stephens aged 30 died in a lightning strike. Former resident of the city, his parents Mr and Mrs Francis Stephens are deceased and lived on West Washington Street. He spent years in Macomb where he was well known. Survived by brothers and sisters including Prof Ross Stephens Industry and Louis Stephens student at the University of Illinois. Funeral services Sunday at 12:30 PM.
A notice cites services at Scott's church with interment in the Col esester cemetery as part of the final arrangements referenced yesterday.
The Bushnell city team hosts Macomb tomorrow afternoon with two lineup switches. Knox college player Rankin will start as pitcher and coach Iggie Hamblin will cover shortstop. Macomb’s regular pitcher Douglas is sidelined by a neck and shoulder muscle contraction.
The final arguments in the Macomb gas rate case will be presented in Springfield on Monday. After arguments the hearing will close while awaiting a decision believed to come soon. City Attorney Switzer will represent the city as in prior proceedings where a suspension of the proposed rate was obtained until fall.
A Commercial Association committee led by J. L. Reno Dr. W. H. Hartman and R. Isaac Empey will ask Macomb city council to pass an ordinance making tuberculosis examination of cows supplying milk compulsory. The aim is to prevent spread of the deadly disease and ensure milk safety before distribution in the city.
Wewanee June 3. James Findley chief of the Wethersfield fire department was crushed to death by a falling building while battling flames at a home on West South Street occupied by Ross Potter. He died en route to Kewanee public hospital after being severely injured in the incident.
The Pueblo Colorado flood from the Arkansas and Fountain rivers on June 4 caused an estimated 1500 to 3000 deaths and over 10 million dollars in property damage. Bridges and rail lines were washed out, communications failed, and hundreds of families lost all possessions as water reached six feet in many areas. The Armour Packing Co. suffered near destruction and urban fires were put out.
Reports from Pueblo indicate severe flood damage with four dead and many bodies moved to morgues. Col. Hamroeck orders all Rangers to Pueblo as eastern Colorado endures record rainfall, inundating Marshall Lake area and flooding Louisville Loveland Greeley and Fort Collins water systems.
