Jury Row Ends In Discharge After Afternoon Session

A jury was discharged yesterday afternoon after a courtroom session that produced no verdict. No details were given on case status or next steps for the parties involved.

A Calaveras jury remained in contention for twenty two ballots over fifteen hours before adjourning. The jury foreman reported the panel could not reach a verdict, with members split on both sides and some expressing strong opposition to the prosecution and defense. Local boys calves bring strong bids at Chicago show

Two Angus steer calves owned by Orville Waller and Kenneth Heberer of McDonough County sold at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. Heberer’s calf earned 16 cents per lb and $170, Waller’s $160 at 17 cents per lb. Both calves won county and district awards, Kenneth receiving a gold watch from the Aberdeen Angus Association. Net profit remains high after shipping and costs.

McDonough County Seeks Support for 116 Orphans Drive

McDonough county residents are urged to pledge support for 116 orphans through the Near East Relief drive. Harold Larson, a field worker, will visit the county to organize the effort, with a local committee led by Mrs. C. B. Townly and including Mrs. F. S. Russell and others, meeting after Dr. Wirt’s visit to organize.

Former Macomb Man Witness in Trial

Geo Stoneking formerly of this city testified as an eyewitness to the killing of Alphonso Tyler a Galesburg negro at the Veal Bros carnival last summer. He appeared on Friday and Saturday and was described as confused, with direct exam answers differing from cross examination in the Galesburg reports.

Union packing house workers in live stock centers outside Chicago were reported to be practically all out in a strike led by union leaders. Chicago plants claimed 90 to 95 percent of regular force remained as reductions in wages took effect this morning.

Bardolph Man Pleads Guilty to Assault and Battery

Bigger Sparger of Bardolph pleaded guilty in Justice Ralston's court to assault and battery on A. V. Blythe of this city former Bardolph. The incident allegedly occurred last Friday night during Blythe's visit. The warrant was sworn by Mrs Blythe. Sparger was fined 15 dollars plus about 22 dollars costs and released.

Ruth Fined By Landis for World Series Tour

Babe Ruth and two Yankee teammates Billy Piercy and Bob Meusel were fined and suspended by Commissioner Landis for taking part in a post season barnstorming tour. Ruth’s share of 1921 world series profits was forfeited and he is suspended until May 20 1922 with an option for reinstatement. The 1922 season begins mid April and the ban keeps Ruth from baseball at least a month next season.

Big Carnival and Dance Benefit for Macomb Athletic Association

A social week features a big carnival dance at Holmes Park on Wednesday December 7 to aid the Macomb Athletic Association. The association supports Macomb’s football program and invites the public to attend. A later event at Jolly’s Hall on Friday December 9 features Campbell’s Jazzapation Orchestra. Also noted is a Football Party as 1921 high school gridmen visit a home gathering hosted by Miss Helen Hainline with games dancing and a menu of meat sandwiches pea salad and fruit salad among others.

Funeral Notice for Lavery of Tolstoy South Dakota

Patrick William Lavery died of pneumonia at Tolstoy South Dakota. His body arrived today and was taken to the Martin chapel. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from St Paul Catholic church conducted by Rev Father M Ryan. Interment in St Pauls cemetery. Short session of city court adjourned until March term after Statler divorce service not obtained.

Small and Curtis move to quash Illinois indictments in court

In Waukegan Illinois Governor Len Small and Vernon Curtis attacked the July Sangamon county grand jury indictments for conspiracy embezzlement and confidence game plans. They argued the special return to press violated the constitution and statutes and asked the court to void the indictments.
