Compensation Will Be Paid over Lake Winnipeg Damages
Manitoba Hydro chairman David Cass-Beggs says compensation will be provided for damages caused directly by proposed Lake Winnipeg regulation for power, though proving direct causation over natural flooding will be hard. He warned that lake levels between 711 and 715 feet would limit interference, and noted most Manitobans favor Hydro’s Nelson River development. He cited uncertainties in Churchill River diversion and said the Lake Winnipeg plan avoids such doubts. The Lake Winnipeg Property Owners Association reports about 1,000 names on a petition urging public hearings before any regulation.
