Prairie Farmers Boost Wheat Acreage 56 Percent Rise to 18.7 Million
Government reports show Prairie wheat plantings up 56 percent this year to 18.7 million acres, reversing a three year decline though still well below 1969's 24.4 million and the 10 year average. Barley and rapeseed plantings also rose while flax and oats fell and summer fallow dropped sharply. Reports from crop correspondents in the Prairies indicate generally improved growth with adequate moisture except in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Farm Building Exemption Changes in Manitoba Bill
A Manitoba bill to widen farm building exemptions under the Municipal Assessment Act and to tax cable TV operators was introduced for second reading. It lowers the minimum farm size for exemptions to four acres, removes non family corporate farm exemptions, and imposes a 1 percent gross revenue tax on cable firms. Amendments also would apply the National Building Code to larger communities and empower a board to enforce it.
