Former Manitoba premier Duff Roblin testified at the inquiry into the Pas forest project, saying he had no reason to doubt the 1967 92 million investment and stood by his government’s Zurich deal with Monaco A G and Churchill Forest Industries. West Coast Grain Shipments Hit New Record in 1966
The Canadian Wheat Board reports west coast clearances of all grains at 236.3 million bushels last Saturday, beating the 1965 56 crop year record. If current pace continues, total exports may surpass 260 million bushels by July 31. Rapeseed and barley lead gains, with rapeseed at 29.5 million and barley at 45.6 million bushels. Chief Commissioner G N Vogel credits improved handling and the block shipping system and car pooling at Vancouver terminals for the record, noting rail delays from labor disputes and heavy snow. Unloads averaged 700 rail cars per day in the 17 weeks since pooling began at Vancouver, about 1.4 million bushels daily. A similar pooling system started at Thunder Bay on June 21.
