Local Teacher to Attend Primary Science Course

Mrs. Margaret Woodward of Rossendale and Pine Creek School Division No. 30 will attend a five day primary science course at Neil Campbell school East Kildonan July 19 to 23 conducted by Charlie Douglas. About 12 Manitoba teachers expected. This marks the third in a 12 non credit course series offered by the Manitoba Teachers Society through July and August.

Sidney Beef Club Achievement Day Highlights

The Sidney Beef Club held Achievement Day on July 2 at the Carberry fair. Calves were weighed then judged, with top placings for Russell Loewen Beverly De Athe Vivian Loewen Dianne Bagnall Grant Lintott Glenn Loewen Lloyd Lintott Ron Lintott Wendy North Ken Wright and Ken North. Vivian Loewen won junior showmanship, Glenn Loewen senior showmanship, Dianne Bagnall best groomed calf, Grant Lintott second best groomed steer. Don Lintott won senior judging. Doug De At he led best pen of three. Ken Wright won stall card. A sale followed. thanks to Doug De At he Bert Lintott and Lionel Wright.

Sundance new wheat licensed for Alberta by agriculture department

Sundance a hardy new winter wheat variety has been licensed by Alberta’s agriculture department. The fall 1977 rollout targets seed growers chosen by the provincial seed stock committee with a limited public allotment. Described as hard red winter wheat, Sundance rivals Winalta in hardiness, resists shattering better than Kharkov 22 MC, and features an excellent kernel. Developed by Dr. M N Grant at the federal agriculture research station in Lethbridge Alberta.

Local teachers attend crafts course in Minnedosa

Mrs Dorothy Blair of Woodside and several Manitoba teachers join a five day crafts teaching course at Minnedosa Collegiate July 12 to 16. Led by Fred Yeo, the session draws about 16 teachers from across the province as part of a 12 course non credit series.

84th Annual Fair Shines Despite Showery Weather

The 84th MacGregor fair organized by the North Norfolk and District Agricultural Society ran July 9 to 11 despite rain. Highlights included hereford grand champion calf bought for $40.75 by the Canadian Livestock Commission, top prize winners in cattle horse and horticulture exhibits, a welding competition won by Lloyd Street, and large showings of heavy and light horses. Final day featured busy ball diamonds with male and female youth competitions and a plan for the 85th fair on new grounds north of Norfolk Manor and Centennial Park.

Town Happenings Near Record Rain Delays Parade and Centre Work

Rain delayed several events but a town parade still occurred with good turnout. The community centre footings near completion and construction will start soon. A severe wind storm caused damage, while the Rainebow Inn gets a new proprietor John Kowaski. Several residents relocate or return, and new housing and school expansions are planned for the fall.

26 Teams Compete in North Norfolk Fair Ball Tournaments

Twenty six teams took part across boys 15 and under fastball and 10 and under divisions, with Austin victorious in multiple events. Austin Cardinals won the men’s fastball final over Portage East End, while MacGregor Cubs and Arden Seniors played for key cups. Arden defeated Norfolk Combines 3-1 in a morning game, Arden edged MacGregor for the Arden Cup, and final results centered on Austin and Arden across several age groups.

Jehovah’s Witnesses at Winnipeg convention plan

The Portage la Prairie congregation will attend a Winnipeg arena gathering July 14 to 18 with about 5,000 delegates from Manitoba Ontario Saskatchewan and nearby U S. The event titled The Divine Name District Assembly will stress serving a named God with a baptismal program anticipated Friday morning. Worldwide preaching numbers exceed 1.5 million with Canada at 49 000 and local costs covered by special funds. A public lecture When All Tensions Collide Head On will be featured.

Demonstration Competitions Held Across District Areas

The June 24 demonstration events at Austin featured junior and senior winners from MacGregor Brookdale Wellwood and Starbuck Portage Carberry Neepawa areas. Notable pairs included Lynn Sawatsky with Debbie Letherhan for Handy Candles and Joanne Unrin with Brenda for Something Fishy, with interdistrict awards going to Betty Mitchell Rhonda Club and Heather Janis Debbie Marshall for Vocal World. Public speaking winners were Peter Siemens Beaver Club and Audrey Black Derry Beef Club, with champions advancing to Sunflower Festival and Winnipeg finals. Congratulations to all participants and winners.
