The Bixby Sefrit libel trial in Judge Pemberton's court ended with a guilty verdict after a 15 day proceeding. Walter Fulcher, key in the case, was not called to testify and faces a prison sentence after trial.
Chief Engineer Ball of the state highway commission outlines the Pacific Highway route from Bel lingham to the county poor farm then to Ferndale. The Northwest Diagonal road will run west to the Great Northern track and north along the east side of the railway to Ferndale, passing beneath the Great Northern tracks. The county farm segment to Ferndale is a preexisting highway and one mile shorter than the Northwest Diagonal.
On June 1 the county treasurer will issue certificates of delinquency for unpaid 1911 or prior taxes when tendered. Miss Rogers must issue the certificates, with additional costs and 15 percent interest paid by the property owner. 1911 taxes should be paid before June 1 to avoid costs.
The class of 1913 at the local high school staged events this week including a Junior-Senior banquet at the Bay home and a baccalaureate sermon by Rev. G J Brouwer at the Reformed church. The class play The Deacon's Second Wife was performed at Jamieson's opera house with strong cast work and detailed staging. A later program at Jamieson's featured violin solo by Suise Ireland, speeches by Edna MacKinnon and E R Oldemeyer, vocal numbers, and diplomas presented by School Board president E Edson.
The Lynden High School class of 1913 is commended for their notable achievements and strong averages. Edna MacKinnon and Reka Oldemeyer receive praise as valedictorian and salutatorian, while the group’s lowest average nears 89 percent.
The wedding occurred in Bellingham on Monday morning with Rev. Herbert Jones and Miss Elnora Folz as the couple. Witnesses Mr. and Mrs. H. Jamieson attended and joined the party to Lynden for a wedding repast at the bride’s home. The bride, long a Lynden resident, and the pastor are praised for their fine standing and the community offers congratulations.
Governor Lister appoints Judge Neterer C M Olson and F W Barlow as trustees of the Bellingham Normal. Donavan and Hammer resignations accepted. John Edens to remain until June 12 1913. The new board and Edens met for the first time on Tuesday.
The county engineer reports a crew surveying and preparing the Northwest Diagonal roads ahead of paving works.
In an eleven inning game at Bellingham last Sunday Lynden secured a 7 to 6 victory over the Bellingham Elks. It was a closely fought contest until the final out with Hadley and Fisher delivering strong battery work. The local twirler was in splendid form throughout.
Lynden and the Elks produced a high scoring game with Hadley's two run homer Reed scoring on the play and Fisher's four base hit in the eleventh deciding the contest. Lynden led early then tied the game in the ninth before falling in extra innings as Casey at the Bat was cited as the finish. Next Sunday Lynden travels to Bellingham to face a newly organized club with four former Cub players.
The Whatcom County board awarded the county printing to the Bellingham Journal after bid disputes with The Tribune. The Tribune protested amid changes in the counting method, while critics doubt the Journal’s status as a general circulation paper. The decision leaves farmers and local taxpayers scrutinizing county publishing.
The Whatcom County Fair at Lynden runs September 24 to 27 featuring regional exhibits events and vendors across four days. Local groups and businesses participate with crafts demonstrations and agricultural displays.
The Lynden cannery on the railroad tracks nears completion and will handle the year's fruit and vegetables. An editorial from the Seattle Sun argues canneries in orchard districts will save thousands of dollars in lost fruit, urging local growers to organize if outsiders do not invest.

Governor Lister proclaims May 24 as Good Roads Day urging commercial groups automobile clubs school districts farmers and all citizens to help improve roads. He also asks districts to dedicate part of May 23 school hours to highway construction education to spur involvement the next day.
Twenty two members attended the May 17 session. Sarah Schroeder is welcomed as a new member. Members will attend a Memorial service at the Methodist church on May 25, meeting at G A R hall at 10 AM to march in. An invitation to join the Bellingham W R C on June 6 is accepted, with a noon dinner and a 2 PM armory gathering. Folt remains weakened. other sick members unchanged.
