The article outlines government guidance for strawberry packing and cooling to preserve quality. H. S. Steinhauer returned Tuesday from Portland and several towns in Oregon and Washington. He says Lynden is good enough for him and plans a 20 by 20 addition for a workshop and to convert the current building into a single large show room.
The speaker notes a long talk of leaving and choosing Lynden as a site with strong local business. On returning home he stops in Portland to buy a large stock for a planned larger town and plans to enlarge his store to receive it.
The United States Department of Agriculture releases a June 1 crop table showing new conditions and comparisons. It covers statewide crop statistics, including area planted and yield expectations, as compiled by the Bureau of Agriculture.
Ferndale and Gus ter Grange members decided to build a tract ion railway from Ferndale to Blaine tapping the valley between. Granges of Lynden Delta and Northwest may join to reach Lynden and possibly Nooksack or Sumas. Motive power expected to be gasoline or steam. No mention of Bellingham as terminus. Blaine likely shipping end.
Mr. and Mrs. A. N. French depart Lynden for Seattle where they will stay awhile. In a reception by the Patrons association, Mr. French urged ongoing school progress, expanded courses in manual training domestic science and agriculture, and a broader Patrons role with lectures by educators to guide parents in child welfare.
The June 1 1910 general crop condition averaged 84.9, compared with 85.0 in 1909 and higher or lower in earlier years. Preliminary acreages for 1910 list winter wheat 402.5, spring wheat 107.3, all wheat 104.4, oats 103.5, barley 100.7, rye 101, cotton 102.8, clover hay 106.2, sugar cane 104.2, total about 103.6. Washington is among three states with barley crop percentage above last year, the others California and Nebraska.
Everson merchants reject Bellingham events and plan to join Lynden festivities. Sumas businessmen will also attend Lynden in large numbers while Blaine and Ferndale prepare programs. Nearby residents from Custer and Sumas note Lynden traditions and neighborliness spur turnout.
W R Ferguson writes from Sos Creek sharing rough Caribou Road travel in B C. camp at 3600 feet, lines on land quality poor, cold snaps, frozen ground, and high winter lows. Travels include 25 miles with fish and ducks, notes companions turning back, and uncertainty about post offices. The piece ends with a note on the Round-up show in Lynden and local health recuperation of Mrs Jamieson.
A one o clock Saturday afternoon golden wedding anniversary will be celebrated at the Gen McPherson home with about 200 invited guests under the trees. The couple, with roots in North Carolina and Iowa, have lived in Nebraska Washington D C Kansas and finally Washington State since 1880. He recalls laying out Blaine and naming it after James G Blaine. He favors a strong reform or revolution to remove falsehoods and keep truth.
B F Chilton and kin depart for their namesake town in Missouri. He plans to visit his 75 year old mother and weighs whether he will return. He believes there are great land investment opportunities and says he is still poor despite money made in real estate.
A speaker recalls seven years of investments in Lynden near the depot. He bought two 10 acre parcels for 150 dollars each and a timber lot for 60 dollars, selling parts for 300, 600, 690 and 200 dollars respectively. He notes future opportunities require more capital to handle.
Readable samples of oats clover and berries from Lynden area farms are on display at the Tribune office. John Burgaff reports an eight acre clover crop and a large hay crop as he milks ten cows with strong cream checks. Other samples include clover oats peas and a berry yield near the Lynden Custer road area.
Frank W. Bixby announces his candidacy for prosecuting attorney in Whatcom County. He cites broad local support from labor leaders, law groups, and the Day Association, noting his seven years in Lynden and a long legal career. He says the county can afford him if he can afford the office and expects to be nominated and elected.
Lynden Public Reading Room adjusts hours to evenings only until fall. Volunteers will staff one evening per week to expand book purchases and improve service. Local women and men listed as helpers. hours 7:30 to 9:00 P M. A visitor from Hull, Iowa, plans farm purchase if family approves.
Dr. Mulder and E. Edson began a leisurely Friday motorcycle tour of Oregon and California. They plan a month or two on the road, stopping at Paradise Valley on Mt. Tacoma after leaving Lynden at noon and reaching Bellingham by 10 PM. The Herald notes they may set pace records, though the start surprised locals.
