State auditors report Lynden’s finances as excellent with no debt and $3,352.16 cash in all funds, current expenses $2,538.07, and available credit $32,242.56. They note overdraft of $27.86 in Dist. 5 and urge closing local improvement districts 5, 6, 8, 15 and Olive Streets while praising clean records and accurate footings by the clerk and treasurer.
Lynden enforces a new traffic ordinance with fines for violating signals. Marshal Jake Le Compte fined three offenders at minimum amounts of 5 dollars plus 2 dollars costs. Auto owners damaging signs face up to 100 dollars. A wagon driver was fined for passing left of signals.
The Lyndon Christian School ended its year with a Friday picnic and program at the Fair Grounds. The program featured Psalm 25:6, prayers by Principal George Ramerman, recitations by students, multiple dialogs on punctuality and other themes, songs by various grades and a closing by Rev. Brink A J.
E Whited of Bellingham has purchased the Lynden Cafe and will take possession next week. He is an experienced restaurant man who has operated in Bellingham and Bremerton and will move his family to Lynden. The former operator Mr Owens will drive to St Louis for the summer.
The Guide Meridian road paving will open to traffic next Sunday as announced by the County Engineer's office. Residents of Lynden have endured detours for months to reach Bellingham and hope for no further delays. The Hannegan Road closure continues as Skagit Construction progresses. paving will extend to the Nooksack Bridge, where a new bridge project will begin.
The proposal seeks to form a large dyking and drainage district for the Nooksack River from Marietta to its forks. Signers pay 25 cents per acre as a guarantee for preliminary costs, with funds credited to future assessments if approved. A permanent plan would include straightening curves and dyking low areas, with an engineer and yearly work, plus state and federal aid access.
Friends gathered at Knapp's Parlors Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of Elmer L. Sicklesteel who died Sunday morning in Bellingham after a brief illness. Rev. W. O. Benadom conducted services and interment followed in Lynden cemetery. He was born in Michigan on September 6, 1872 and moved to Wiser Lake with his parents at age 17. Survived by his mother and brothers William of Alberta George of Davenport Iowa and Charles of Wiser Lake.
American Legion Lynden Post No 99 sponsors a Friday night show at Hawley’s Hall headlined by Sergeant Danny Wallace. The two part production includes a Winter Garden style review with sixteen chorus costume changes and About Face a light doughboy farce. Fifty performers help fill the venue with soldiers sailors and friends. tickets available at City Drug Store.
Lynden Public Schools will open August 30 with 38 weeks. Superintendent William A. Fisher announced a full list of grade and high school faculty including Miss Gertrude Imus Miss Pearl Nessen Miss Mabel McLeod Miss Hazel Lowrey Miss Nina Hanson Miss Nellie Bromley Miss Helen Johnson Miss Lula Wright Miss Anna Wright William A. Fisher Miss Edna MacKinnon Miss Lois Yeck Fred Rockey Lester Landaal Miss Frances Knapp Miss Lucille Powlison Miss Maud McDonald Miss Calla Van Syckle. The extra two weeks will raise state fund cash for the district per teacher input.
The Lynden High School class of 1920 will hold a reunion Monday evening at Wiser Lake. All alumni are asked to meet at Blonden's Confectionery at 6 30 P M. Messages note a group trip to Noon Station to visit Mr A Veleke's farm. A county W C T U convention is set for June 16 at Deming with Lynden representation sought.
The Lynden council refused a carnival license citing suitability concerns. Boerrave and Zoet won the sidewalk contract for Std and Edison streets at 4787.40, with work starting immediately and aimed for quick completion.
At the annual stockholders meeting in the W. O. W. Hall in Bellingham the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company will proposed a 20 percent rate rise to cover higher expenditures. Directors also urge equalization of stockholder rentals with renters and a future dividend on stock, noting many holders currently receive no return.
C M Creamer Lynden Cannery manager says this year’s Lynden cherry harvest will be lighter than 1919 due to late frosts but the fruit should be larger and finer. He anticipates paying about the same price as last year once the market is set.
At the Henry Haveman farm hens are trained to lay oversize eggs. A White Leghorn produced an egg measuring 7% inches in circumference one way by 6 inches the other. Mrs. George Worthen leaves for Pullman for graduation exercises. Miss Elsie Worthen will receive her diploma this year.
Dairymen in Lynden urged to apply at the Tribune office before Saturday night to join the honor roll of Owners of Tested Herds. A state tuberculin tester is active in the county this week and hundreds of cows will be tested this year. The test is free and signups are encouraged to ensure milk safety.
Lynden residents are cautioned to keep cows off sidewalks and parking strips. Marshal Jake Le Compte reports enforcement under an ordinance, with several offenders arrested and fined by Police Judge Frank Le Cocq.
Lynden Community Club will debate whether to host a Fourth of July celebration and home picnic at Lynden High School Monday night. A formal discussion followed last meeting as residents consider gas shortage and a lively local event with races and sports.
R W Mize of Rome Township was elected delegate from Whatcom to the State Convention of the Non Partisan League. Alternates elected include J J Falkner Mountain View A D Zander Ten Mile Township Henry Shagren Lynden and W H Kauffman Ferndale Township. The State Convention meets at North Yakima on July 19.
Mrs. F. M. Bloom and family returned to Lynden from a planned California trip after running out of fuel in Oregon. They report stations selling only two gallons or none to Washington cars and witnessed stranded motorists. The Bloom vehicle limped home using coal oil and ether.
Gerrit Top reportedly chopped one of his toes with an axe last week. The incident details remain limited as reports note the injury occurred during an on site accident.
Lynden schedules a twilight baseball showdown Friday at 6 pm against the Brunswicks of Bellingham, aiming to rebound after a 9 to 5 opening win over Sumas. Manager Bradford Knapp arranged ropes outside the diamond to keep spectators in view, with a large crowd expected.
A Lynden Cemetery Association will be incorporated following a meeting of lot owners at City Hall Monday night. The group plans to improve grounds and set up care for graves with assessments on lot owners and a sexton to manage the grounds. S. T. Jackman chairs the incorporation committee with Nels Jacobson Ruth Handy and P. M. Serrurier as members.
A Lynden petition circulated this week asks for 24 hour service and a new switchboard at the Lynden Farmers Mutual Telephone Company central office. Signatures are being collected at the Drug Store from patrons and shareholders who state the current board is inadequate and hurts service.
Mrs Wilder Jones visited Lyn den this week and her husband, Wilder Jones, is now connected with the J C Penney Co. chain of stores and is at Wenatchee, establishing a business link for the family.
