Fred Rockey Returns to U.S. on Leviathan Transport
Fred Rockey arrived back in the United States Monday aboard the giant American transport Leviathan. The ship, once the Vaterland, is noted as the largest vessel afloat and carried 8,000 soldiers on the return voyage, a count larger than the combined populations of Lynden Blaine Ferndale Sumas and Everson.

Lynden Herds Tested for Tuberculosis by U S Department
Dr J E Backus of the United States Department of Agriculture tested three Lynden herds for tuberculosis this week. It is the second annual government test and the herds will be placed on the official accredited list. The Nels Jacobson Guernsey herd Andrew Benson Holsteins and Will Lauckhart Ayrshire herd were examined. Farmers seeking testing information may contact Dr Backus in Portland Oregon.

McMillan Seeks Back Salary From 1915 to 1918
J B McMillan chairman of the county board asks Judge Hardin to compel Auditor Miller to issue county warrants totaling 3050 as back pay for services as commissioner from January 11 1915 to November 11 1918. He contends the 1913 law fixes daily pay at five dollars for up to 200 days per year while Miller claims 1800 yearly under Remington and Ballinger code and regards the paragraph as void.

Sergeant Eylar Staight reports from World War I front lines in a letter dated November 12 1918 to his mother Mrs Ruth Staight of Lynden. He details fifty days at Verdun twelve at Pont-a-Mousson and major actions from Bois de Belleau to St Mihiel Champagne and Verdun Meuse pushes. He recalls five big battles over the top twelve times with light wounds gas burns and steady luck.
