The Lynden epidemic shows marked improvement with few new cases reported by local physicians. Four deaths occur this week due to pneumonia linked to influenza, including two in the Riddie family and two Bussard family members. School reopenings and public meetings may resume soon as conditions ease.
Newton D. Riddle age 1 month dies from pneumonia with funeral services held. The following day the one month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Riddle dies and is buried the next day.
Mrs Pearl Mina Crabtree Bussard who died of pneumonia will have funeral services Sunday if her Iowa parents can arrive. Born April 19 1889 in Dows Iowa she moved to Lynden in 1908 taught there four terms and married Victor Bussard on August 3 1910. She leaves husband three children and many relatives.
Friends gathered at Lynden cemetery for the funeral of Mrs. Charles Bussard who died Friday from influenza. Rev. W. O. Benadom officiated. She was born March 14 1887 in Gordon County Georgia married Cheries Bussard December 17 1906 and leaves husband daughter Arlene Angela parents four sisters and a late daughter Margaret Charlotte.
Funeral services were held Sunday for Lola P. Adams 33 years old at her passing December 3 in Butte Montana. She was born in Hart Michigan and survived by her husband, one son, her parents four sisters and one brother.
The Lynden Lodge of Knights of Pythias elected officers at a Monday evening meeting. J. H. Jacoby was named Chancellor Commander, Nick Boerhave V C, Walter Pixley Prelate, Harvey Slade M A, A M Riddle Inner Guard, Harry Mock Outer Guard, H B Steinhauser K R and S, Walter Hemingway M F, A H Frasier M E, E E Horton trustee.
Six hundred cows are already listed for the Whatcom County Cow Testing Association formed by H B Carroll Jr county agent. Albert Jensen of Laurel will be official tester and the group may expand to two testers if applications grow. Members include Jackman Brothers Vander Griend Brothers Milkyway Farm and Bridgeview Farm among others with Monday as the start day.
Funeral services were held for Alvin Claire Kelly nine year old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kelly of Lynden. The boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Kelly, died Saturday after being thrown beneath a gravel wagon when a horse skidded. Rev. W. O. Benadom conducted the service at the Leist home. Buster was described as bright and cheery and will be missed by many friends. He was born in Lynden on July 3, 1909.
Miss Esther Hawley daughter of Mr and Mrs R E Hawley of Lynden married Saturday night in Juneau Alaska to Mr Walter Swinbjornsen of Blaine A telegram with news arrived Sunday in Lynden Miss Hawley has been living in Juneau with her sister Mrs William Van Well Mr Swinbjornsen works in the Daily Dispatch office at Juneau.
The Lynden exodus starts with Alton Johnson and Lucas De Koster arriving home from Fort McDowell California after honorable discharge. More Lynden soldiers follow as discharges surge nationwide and the Seattle Naval Training Camp empties at about two hundred per day.
Carl Reid son of Mr and Mrs W A Reid sends a wartime letter describing front combat for fifteen days and praising German dugouts as sturdy root cellars for Lynden district farmers. He recalls heavy fighting and the Yanks pushing the enemy back with strong divisions and extensive dugouts beneath the Hindenburg line. He offers to bring a Fritz built forty foot underground dugout as a root cellar.
Dr. W. T. Johnson of the Western Washington Experiment Station at Puyallup will visit Lynden area poultrymen. He will speak on Poultry Diseases at Laurel Grange Hall Saturday night. Attendees may bring sick birds for inspection and post mortem. The Poultrymen's Association monthly meeting follows.
A soldier recounts German shelling and a daring Alsatian surrender at No Man's Land. He notes grim casualties among comrades, hopes for victory, and reflects on the Christmas and Fourth of July plans, expressing longing to be home soon.
Lynden and communities are urged to join the Red Cross during the December Roll Call week. The campaign aims to enroll every American for 1919 with no fund drive, only dollar memberships, featuring programs, posters, films, and a one hundred house enrollment plan.
The Y M C A at Camp Lewis asks Lynden residents to provide Christmas for about thirty thousand soldiers. They urge churches and clubs to donate pound candy boxes with cards, to cover barracks quarantines and hospitals. Notify Camp Lewis Army Y M C A of the number of boxes and bring them in for forwarding.
The Lynden Red Cross calls for workers at the Mason rooms to aid in sewing. Pajamas are being produced for hospital use and a large number must be finished promptly. A daughter was born on November 9 to Mr and Mrs Jas Thomas.
William A. Fisher, Red Cross Christmas Drive chairman for Lynden district, announces captains and assistants for six teams to solicit memberships. Teams list captains and members. additional locale groups include Glendale Delta North Prairie and Riverside. All over fifteen urged to join. enrollment plans to call on every home with a Tribune enrollment list next week.
Rev W O Benahom led funeral rites Thursday at Lynden cemetery for Lizzie Robison Leake who died December 8. Born September 13 1888 in Woodruff Kansas she married Walter R Leake July 22 1908 in Alma Nebraska. Survived by husband two sisters a brother two parents and three children.
