The AP survey shows farmers from New England to the Rockies facing multi‑million losses as drought persists. Regions report water shortages, aid in disaster declarations, and calls for higher feed costs relief.
Robert Froner a 22 year old Brooklyn draftsman won a record twin double payoff of 172726 80 at Roosevelt Raceway with his wife and six relatives and friends. The group had previously lost a twin double bet and may face substantial taxes depending on final calculations.
About 500 firefighters contained a mountain brush fire near Newhall, scorching over 3 200 acres. The age old Angeles National Forest landmark tree, 36 feet in circumference and 120 feet spread, was heavily damaged and likely to die. AP reports a pattern of well dressed women targeting white clad nannies in Central Park. They case the nannies, offer more money or less work or fewer children, then try to entice them away from their employers. The scheme unfolds as nannies observe wealthier carers.
Robert F. Murphy 35 was booked for assault with a deadly weapon after he rammed his pickup into a house four times when his estranged wife would not answer the door. The truck ended up in the kitchen, police said in San Francisco.
Washington AP reports the Air Force retired 15 Atlas ICBMs at Warren AFB Wyoming and plans nine more at Offutt AFB Nebraska. The program will also inactivate later Atlas E missiles and Titan I rockets as 650 Minuteman missiles and 256 Polaris tubes prepare for combat.
Burglars broke into the Crosby son Lindsey's Tarzana residence and stole jewelry valued at 1700 dollars. Bing Crosby and roommate actor Clark Keeney had moved in three days earlier and were still unpacking.
In sansom Park Texas a council meeting deteriorated into violence as Mayor A C Hicks was struck by his own gavel and knocked down by a chair. City secretary Toy Pulliam was struck in the ear during a wild swing by a councilman. The incident followed a dispute over a water bill and led to door locks being changed.
Prof. Heinz Barwich a 53 year old nuclear physicist formerly deputy director at the Joint Nuclear Research Institute in Dubna and later director at Rossendorf East Germany has fled to West Germany and been granted political asylum in the United States by the State Department authorities.
Avalanche Journal reports the Lubbock Public Schools board approved adding 18 elementary teachers and four contingency elementary and four secondary positions. Net faculty would rise from 1420 to 1437, with six motions approving architects for 1965-66 projects and specifics on new facilities at Harwell Hodges Posey Wolfforth Hutchinson Slaton and more.
Broadway production halted in the middle of the first act when Sally Ann Howes could not cue due to a jammed dressing room door. In Henrietta Texas a pump failure left a town of about 3500 without water. Mayor D O Daniel said service could resume before noon after filling a 200000 gallon tank atop the water tower. Public schools were suspended as residents were urged to use water only for emergencies until full supply returned.
