Aras Segregationist Lester Maddox provoked a large white-supporter crowd outside his Pickwick restaurant. Police rerouted traffic as the enraged leader shouted at reporters and critics, calling the incident a police state and denouncing civil rights enforcement.
An $8,785,519 contract for Canadian River pipeline segments from Lubbock to South Plains cities was awarded. R. H. Fulton bid lowest among five, with work extending the line to Slaton Tahoka ODonnell Lamesa Levelland and Brownfield. Borger and Pampa line remains to be let. Completion aimed as lake fills in 1967.
A fierce storm west of Seminole caused a concrete barn collapse injuring a laborer Isaias Ventor. Roof and walls were ripped away as 100 mph winds and flash downpours battered Gaines County. Crop losses were reported while Fort Worth and Lubbock baked in heat elsewhere.
