Freezing Temperatures Snap Across South Plains

Wet valley freeze and heavy rains hit the South Plains and Lower Rio Grande Valley, forcing evacuations, delaying airlift relief for Hurricane Inez victims, and causing at least one death. Temperatures plunged to record lows in Lubbock Amarillo Midland and nearby towns as rain flooded wide areas and roofs collapsed under water.

Senators charge park fundraising used ethical concerns

State Sen. Jim Bates accused the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park fund of pressuring donors using unethical tactics. He said the Parks and Wildlife Commission sought a legal opinion to portray the fund as private, while Bates argues information was being gathered for the probe. The LBJ Park spans about 610 acres opposite the Johnson Ranch near Stonewall. no state funds were used to acquire the land.

British adventurers David Johnstone and John Hoare left Virginia Beach May 21 to row to England. They were last seen August 11, about 1,500 miles from England. the discovery closes the Puffin saga and ends hopes for survival.

Rifle fire on Turnpike injures girl as three youths fire on traffic

Three boys aged 11 and 12 fired rifles at traffic on the Dallas Fort Worth Turnpike injuring a schoolgirl and damaging two school buses. Police in Grand Prairie quickly captured them. they faced juvenile officers. They said they aimed at cars but did not intend serious harm.

Midwest and Great Plains hit by wintry storm and tornado

Vicious wind and sweeping snow blocked Midwest and Great Plains with heavy rains sweeping Texas as a deadly tornado struck Belmont Iowa causing at least one death.
