Sorghum Rolls In Area as Crops Look Up

The grain sorghum harvest gathers speed across the Plains while wet cool weather delays cotton. The 23 county October forecast from the Lubbock Cotton Exchange and Plains Cotton Growers estimates 1,585,000 bales of cotton for the region, down 25,000 from September.

No Official Estimates for Big Grain Sorghum Crop

Despite no official figures, observers expect a grain sorghum harvest exceeding last year’s 130,432,900 bushels from 28 counties. Cotton and grain sorghum prices and a maize crop equal to last year promise over 305 million dollars to South Plains farmers this fall, with cotton farm value at about 183.86 million and grain sorghum adding over 122 million. Federal payments for acreage reductions will total around 190 million, boosting the regional economy as cash crops move to market.
