Eisenhower Warns on Nuclear Use in Viet Nam Debate

Dow Jones Drops to 1963 Low in Sharp Market Slide

Federal hikes FHA VA mortgage rates to six percent

Inez Starts Slow Drift Toward Florida Coast

Hurricane Inez moved slowly south south west off the Bahama region threatening the Florida southeast coast. It held 85 mph winds as a disabled Liberian tanker and 38 on board drifted nearby while the Coast Guard sent the Mackinac cutter to assist. Waves lashed Bahamian streets as forecasters warned of continuing danger.

Classic Battle Ends In 323 Viet Cong Killed Northeast Of Saigon

U S Cavalrymen and South Korean troops trapped a force of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese 290 miles northeast of Saigon in open coastal lowlands. The two day clash produced 323 enemy fatalities and 11 prisoners as U S fire drove guerrillas toward a sandspit and mountains to the west.

American Forces Report Light Losses In Viet Nam Action

North of Qu Nhon a Sunday operation labeled Operation Irving saw U S and South Korean troops clash with Communist units. South Koreans say 351 enemies killed as U S 1st Air Cavalry joined the pursuit of the 610th Division. Air strikes and helicopter assaults continued around Qui Nhon and Dong Hoi as U S forces press the air war north of the DMZ.

Texas researchers theorize inborn defect linked to alcoholism

Texas researchers Rogero Williams and Mary Noy Roach of the University of Texas at Austin report a tentative theory that a brain glucose metabolism defect may predispose certain individuals to alcoholism. Hamster tests showing drunkenness suggest sugar supplied to the blood could offset the brain defect, potentially explaining why candy and sugary drinks aid recovery after drinking.

Woman arrested for offering bribe to Dallas officers

In Dallas three police stopped a 31 year old woman for failing to leave ID at an accident scene. She offered each officer ten dollars to release her. She then wrote a thirty dollar check. All three officers arrested her for attempting to bribe a police officer.

West Texas water study funded in spending bill

Senate Appropriations Committee backed a $200,000 allocation for a new survey of water importation to West Texas and eastern New Mexico. The plan, attached to the House public works bill, also keeps $49 million for Texas projects and includes $214,215,000 for completion of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority project.
