Passenger boardings at Lubbock Municipal Airport rise again this year as the city reports continued gains. A zoning protest is planned for Thursday over a pattern on Avenue Q. The annual city banquet drew about 500 attendees with mayor and officials speaking.
The Senate passed a 1.75 billion antipoverty bill for a third year with a 49 to 20 vote. A move to raise the program to 2.5 billion was cut back to Johnson’s budget by 45 to 27. Senators Kennedy urged higher funding, while Dirksen aligned with the president’s budget.
American and Allied troops tightened a vise around a Communist force trapped on beaches near Saigon. Infantry and ships closed in, killing 314 enemy soldiers in three days as part of Operation Irving, raising Communist deaths to 767 since September. A Caribou crash near An Khe killed 10 with 20 injured, while air and sea forces continued strikes into North Vietnam.

A swift-moving cold front swept into Central Texas Tuesday bringing heavy rains and gusty winds. rainfall topped about 1 inch in the South Plains while Snyder logged over 1.20 inches and Midland Odessa saw scattered showers. Temperatures plunged to the mid 40s to 60s with a record low 51 degrees in the region.
A powerful cold front brought heavy rain to North Texas. Fort Worth reported up to 4 inches with flooding in Forest Hill and underpasses inundated. Dallas and Fort Worth saw one to two inches during rush hour with widespread small floodings and stalled traffic. Blustery northeast winds peaked around OT mph.

Plains Cotton Growers board voted 21 to 0 to back a drive for expanded cotton research and a uniform 1 per base assessment. Ray Forkner of Lubbock led the advocacy noting synthetic fiber rivals invest heavily and about 400 regional cotton groups support the plan.
