Cavalrymen clash routs Viet Cong on central Vietnam coast

U S air cavalrymen charged into a mixed force of about 300 Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnamese regulars on the central coast. They killed 110 and captured seven prisoners while downing three American helicopters. US forces reported light own casualties and pursued the enemy at night.

West Coast crash claims 18 aboard DC9 in Oregon foothills

The West Coast Airlines DC9 that disappeared Saturday night with 18 people aboard was found Sunday in the Cascade foothills southeast of Oakland. No survivors were reported. The plane, on a Eugene to Portland hop en route to San Francisco, vanished while descending to Portland. An aerial search with two dozen aircraft and a large ground party followed dense fog and rain.

Inez Threat Looms Over Florida And Bahamas

The tropical cyclone Inez lashed the western Bahamas with high winds and spawned a tornado near Nassau. It threatens south Florida with 100 mph gusts, raising seas to 8 to 12 feet and causing at least one death in Palm Beach. The storm stalled near the Florida coast, moving slowly north northeast as forecasters predicted impacts from Marathon to Stuart.

Lubbock peaked at 89, Fort Wayne fell to 31, Lansing hit 30 tying a 30 year record, Milwaukee matched an 80 year record at 21, and Little Rock dropped to 4 as Asheville reached freezing.

J H Maxey Fatally Shot in Lubbock

James Herschel Maxey a 47 year old Lubbock contractor was found fatally shot in the 4500 block of 66th Street. A 22 caliber rifle lay beside him and investigators cited a self defense gunshot wound. He lived at 2104 Vicksburg and is survived by a son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements pending.
