Michael O Hearn a former Mid High School student in Carlsbad entered the Spanish style building armed with a .22 rifle and held Principal Merl Anderson and Assistant Principal Joe Stell hostage for a two hour standoff before taking his own life. Mrs Olive was briefly held and a deputy suffered a minor wound. Police secured the scene and evacuated students as they responded.
