Racial unrest softens as integration moves spread
Across cities from Atlanta to New Orleans officials push for desegregation. Chamber of Commerce and local committees urge open service, hotels drop barriers, and schools begin limited integration. In Memphis a court order desegregated pools but closed facilities temporarily. The trend spans Charlotte hotels, Lynchburg drugstores, Norfolk theaters, Ocean City restaurants, Nashville offices, and Kentucky athletics, with statewide Florida gains and New Orleans losing a national convention worth about ten million dollars.
