Flying Thermometer marks reentry test of Apollo craft
A high speed reentry test involves a 200-pound instrument package accelerated into Earth orbiting path. A small solid fuel motor provides a 30 second burst to ram the package toward Earth and prisms of fire form a 20,000 degree shock front. Data is relayed to Ascension Island as a thermometer like heating probe records temperatures during fiery dash.
