Oil Industry Sees Billions Needed for New Reserves
The American Petroleum Institute warns that by 1980 the domestic oil and gas sector must invest about 70 billion dollars to locate enough reserves. Refiners expect higher capital costs for unleaded gasoline, with studies showing refinery investments from 13.2 to 55.8 million dollars and per-gallon cost rises up to about 2 cents. Industry officials urge substantial exploration to maintain a cushion against imported oil as demand climbs in the 1970s.

Nuclear experiment record shows gas release at Rulison site
At the Project Rulison site in Garfield County Colorado a gas well released over 400 million cubic feet of gas after a nuclear device was detonated in 1969. Austral Oil official C Wardell Leisk told the American Petroleum Institute that sustained production tests began last October and tritium and Krypton 85 levels were below safety guidelines. The device, supplied by the AEC, was detonated 8430 feet deep, and the event followed the earlier Gas Buggy test in 1967 Nevada. Leisk urged continued nuclear stimulation as potentially beneficial for the public and industry and noted plans for further underground tests.
