Austin School Board Opposes Federal Desegregation Plan
HEW officials say the plan aims for 12-18 days of desegregated exposure per year with a 10 percent variance in race makeup across 56 Austin schools. The district seeks closings, new construction, and busing to preserve neighborhood schools while mixing Negro Mexican American and Anglo students for special classes. Rep Maurice Young criticizes higher costs and says the plan undermines neighborhood schools despite desegregation being the law.
