Ailing Copilot Dies After In-Flight Emergency Surgery

On a Varig Airlines Flight 854 from Buenos Aires to New York an ailing copilot, Geraldo Segala, 29, died after an on board emergency procedure. A Stockholm surgeon and stewardess performed an airway operation using a knife from the galley and alcohol sterilization. Autopsy to determine cause of death.

Kennedy Pearson Reach Accord On Nuclear Warheads

President Kennedy and Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Orbit Shot Plans Firm

Mercury officials and astronaut L Gordon Cooper Jr met for three hours to confirm the 22 orbit flight as go. Cooper prepared with exercises and a countdown test as NASA reported smooth operations and a calm spaceport ahead of liftoff between 8 and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. High Gear Placing Cotton Rolls Across High Plains

Castro Forces Battle Rebels In Matanzas Province

Exile sources report 400 dead on both sides in weeks of combat in Matanzas during March and April. Fidel Castro’s forces allegedly pacified the area with large troop mobilizations and air support. Four government troops were killed and over 40 wounded when friendly fire hit a government column.

Tornado Destroys Lamb County Cattle Shed

A small twister demolished a 150 by 14 foot cattle shed on Dr. William N. Orr's farm northwest of Spade Lamb County. Neel, the farm operator, said wind lifted posts and a path about 150 feet wide was made with about 100 yards length. Grass fires near Dumas were aided by lightning and fought by more than 50 volunteers as storms sent winds to 45 mph.
