Lubbock Driver Killed in Midland Auto Race Mishap

Dave Fawcett a 34 year old Lubbock motor company owner was killed in a race at Rattlesnake Raceway Midland. Capt Tilden S Holley a Reese AFB test pilot was critically injured and another man hurt in the same event. Fawcett led the race when his OSCA Bandini suffered a rear axle failure sending the car into a skid. Capt Donald Carter Amarillo Topeka Kan was following and tried to avoid the crash.

Federal troops ordered to bases near Birmingham after riot

Police sealed off a 20 block area as thousands of enraged Negroes rioted in retaliation for two racial bombings. Six buildings burned and a patrolman was stabbed. Hospitals reported 22 injuries and two detentions while officers ringed the area with armed units. Fawcett killed in a crash tied to the unrest. Captain Holley injured. Police searched vehicles and frisked drivers in the riot zone. Northern cities condemned the violence as Governor Wallace pledged 10,000 officers to restore order.

Kennedy pledges federal power to curb Birmingham violence

President Kennedy announced three steps to restore order in Birmingham including sending Army troops to Maxwell Field in Montgomery and Ft. McClellan at Anniston. He directed negotiators back to the city and urged Alabama to maintain peace while warning extremists not to sabotage the truce.

Plane Crash Kills 32 Aboard UAA Flight from Cairo

United Arab Airlines twin engine plane crashed in dust storm near a lemon grove village about 20 miles north of No Villagers Hurt. All 32 aboard died including 28 passengers and four crew. Witnesses described the explosion raining burning debris and fragments over the area. Police sealed the site as debris and a wing were found in trees.

Soviets Hint At New Nuclear Tests If U.S. Proceeds

Moscow radio warned the United States may launch a fresh nuclear test series if Washington goes ahead with its announced tests.
