Mystery gunman wounds challenger in Illinois primary
In Chicago a husky Democratic challenger to Rep. William L. Dawson, Fred D. Hubbard, 36, was shot in the left shoulder at campaign headquarters. Hubbard fired back, missing the assailant who fled. Hubbard, allied with Dr. King’s programs, was in good condition at Michael Rouse Hospital. Dawson offered $15,000 for information. The incident followed a surge of civil rights activity and recalls past violence in Negro politics.
