Defense Department records show 320,129 killed through March 16 with 253,000 enemy deaths since August 1964 under General Westmoreland. U.S. losses total 20,096 from 1961 to March 16 and 3,555 in the war zone from noncombat causes.
A King led protest in Memphis drew up to 6,000 people, turning violent with looting and fires. One 16 year old was killed and 48 injured, including four officers. Police used tear gas and night sticks as curfew and state emergency orders stretched 7 pm to 3 am. National guardsmen and riot patrols arrived as downtown and Beale Street suffered widespread damage.
In Stanford California a heart patient and a potential donor were admitted to Palo Alto Stanford Hospital as officials mull a second transplant. Decision cites study results with no set Monday timetable. If performed it would be the fourth US heart transplant attempt with no survivors among prior cases.

CAPT. DENNIS L. Graham, an early swing wing F111A pilot, is listed as missing in action after his aircraft failed during a combat mission over Southeast Asia. Reese Air Force Base notified his parents of the loss. Graham, 26, had completed two F111A missions and was on his third when the plane vanished. The Saigon command declined to detail the incident or speculate on the cause.
Little temperature change expected with highs in the mid 70s and lows around the mid 40s. A 10 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms is forecast for Friday and Friday night with south to southwest winds at 10 to 20 mph.
