In High Ridge Missouri residents clash with volunteer firemen as brush fires burn across timbered hills. Firefighters battle a six mile blaze while debates over missing seven dollar fire protection tags and recent arsons unfold amid a nearby house set to burn.
HEW officials will visit Lubbock within two weeks to review alleged de facto segregation as the district risks losing federal funds for failing to show substantial progress under the Civil Rights Act. Superintendent Nat Williams outlined possible steps to comply without abandoning the neighborhood school concept, including boundary changes.
Army Gen. Creighton W. Abrams left Washington after two days of secret discussions with President Johnson and top leaders. He warned of Communist capability for offensive actions, said the military initiative had not been lost, and hinted at more fighting to come as Tet concerns linger.

A spectacular fire roared atop an 11 story building under construction in downtown Atlanta and spread to surrounding skyscrapers. Flaming debris fell to streets below as four buildings burned including the Dinkler Plaza Hotel and others were threatened. No injuries were reported.
Washington Senate again postponed final action on a bill fusing President Johnsons ten percent income tax surcharge with a six billion dollar spending cut. The measure keeps excise revisions on autos and telephone service, with rates at risk of a drop if not enacted. A textile import quota amendment advanced, threatening jobs with six month talks and possible quotas if no accord.
AP reports Yuri Gagarin the first man in space died Wednesday in an air accident during training in Moscow. Col. Vladimir Seryogin, detachment chief, also killed. Both to be buried in the Kremlin wall. In Wichita Falls, JP Ralph Davis set bond at 25,000 each for Jerry and Peggy Golden in a $12,000 bank holdup case.
Five year old Sally Harrington in Pontiac Michigan has lived six months on 800 pints of blood for aplastic anemia. If transfusions continue at up to 50 pints weekly doctors believe she may be cured. Sally remains confined to a padded bed at St Joseph's Hospital amid ongoing donations from Detroit Pontiac area residents.
An Associated Press survey finds 14 of 24 Democratic governors back President Johnson while many party leaders in 26 Republican-led states could swing the nomination in Chicago. Kennedy and McCarthy gain traction in nonaligned states as key delegations in Nebraska Ohio Pennsylvania Texas Tennessee and others show signs of movement ahead of the August convention.
Bill Eugene Scott, 39, confessed to killing Paul Moss, 81, a prominent Odessa attorney, on May 11, 1967. He received 25 years for murder and an additional five for forgery, to run concurrently, with parole possible in five years. Deputy Don Reaves testified as the case unfolded in a 45 minute session.
The Texas Supreme Court ruled Garland cannot require Texas Power & Light to obtain a permit to serve a proposed 118 unit complex. The court said a 1915 franchise extended to 1990 supersedes a 1949 ordinance and cannot be destroyed by regulation aimed at municipal advantage. Chief Justice Calvert and Justice Steakley dissented.
