The Chicago widow Betty Lanza was found dead in a locked room the investigators list remains unclear. Authorities tentatively classify the death as natural but asphyxiation is considered a possible cause. relatives recall her heartbreak after the singer Mario Lanza’s Rome death and a turbulent late period with three funerals.
A United States space launch sent a beach ball sized satellite toward the sun aboard a Thor Able rocket. At 10 p.m. EST the satellite was 119 miles from Earth, moving 7,101 mph, with earlier readings showing 42,460 miles distance and 9,150 mph. Scientists at Jodrell Bank report normal function and solar powered radio equipment, with contact hoped to continue.
The Senate voted 49 to 35 to strike Section I from the Eisenhower civil rights program, removing a provision that would have made it a federal crime to interfere with federal court orders in desegregation. The move followed Southern opposition and a lengthy debate led by Sen. Lausche to widen the measure, with support and criticism from Dirksen and Russell.
A six year old Lubbock boy, Dennis Dickey, was found dead in his yard after apparently being strangled by a cotton rope. Off duty fireman Leon Dickey aided with mouth to mouth resuscitation until an ambulance arrived. The death occurred at about 2 50 p m as the boy played alone on his swing. police noted others nearby as family members found him on the way home from school.

Dr Roy Chapman Andrews 76 world famous explorer and naturalist died at Peninsula Community Hospital Carmel after a heart seizure. He had lived in retirement in Carmel Valley and rose to fame in the 1920s with expeditions to central Asia bringing back eggs and specimens.
In fog off Nakaminato sixty miles north of Tokyo the fishing boat Yoshimaru of sixty three tons with a fourteen man crew sank after colliding with the freighter Umishima Maru, twenty four hundred ton, leaving twelve crewmen unaccounted for.
The Castro government intervened four sugar mills operated by the Guan tanamo Sugar Company in Oriente Province, valued at more than 10 million dollars, marking the first U S owned mills seized as expropriation fears grow.
