Navy scientists report a successful two-in-one satellite launch on Wednesday as the first step toward a working navigation system. The mission aims to provide an enduring satellite network to support naval operations and civilian users alike.
The Navy reports a successful orbit test of a 42 pound radiation satellite and a 20 inch sphere attached to a 36 inch navigation vehicle. Officials say the two craft separated in orbit with the smaller lead ahead and complete orbits around the earth every 10144 minutes within 563 to 460 miles altitude. Rear Adm. Connolly says the test marks real space capability for the United States.
A 61 year old Lubbock woman died instantly when her car hit a Santa Fe train at the intersection of Farm Road 1294 and the tracks. The vehicle was reportedly going about 30 mph while the train traveled roughly 60 mph. The car was dragged, struck the locomotive, bounced into a ditch, and was demolished.
A fire and explosion southwest of Muleshoe left five dead, including John Lee Howard, who would have turned 21 this year. The incident occurred at noon Wednesday, killing the six year old groom and his bridegroom of 11 days.
A man Howard Nowell died when an acetylene torch ignited fumes in an empty insecticide barrel. His wife Jaqueta Nowell and his 17 year old brother Bill were nearby as the blast sent the barrel 150 feet. Howard and Jaqueta had married 11 days earlier and both were ENMU students. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Muleshoe with burial at Hill Memorial Park.
The United Nations Security Council debates Israel's seizure of Adolf Eichmann from Argentina. Argentina condemns the action as a violation of national sovereignty while Israel defends it as justified given Eichmann's Nazi crimes. Frondizi reportedly angry, seeks talks, but Israel resists returning Eichmann. The US backs Argentina's call for adequate amends.
A 13-year-old boy, Mike Crawford, died after touching high tension wires while guiding friends on a 20 foot high catwalk at his father’s butane plant in Floydada. Resuscitation efforts lasted 30 minutes with no life signs. The father, Clifford L Crawford, had recently bought the plant and had been giving family safety warnings.
State Senator Grady Hazlewood remained in poor condition after a flash explosion at his Amarillo residence. He suffered a broken arm, fractured jaw, eye injuries, and burns while cutting the top from an empty 50 gallon drum with a torch. Doctors hoped to save the eye.

O Keefe 51 known as Specs, who testified against eight Ban dits in the Brink s robbery, was discharged from Suffolk Superior Court after Judge Felix Forte ruled his debt to society paid. He had pleaded guilty to part in the January 1950 heist and served over four years awaiting sentence. Over $1 million loot remains missing, and O Keefe says he does not know its whereabouts.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev will visit Cuba in August, announced by Soviet Ambassador Vladimir Bazikin who did not specify a date. Bazikin, leaving for Moscow, said Moscow would open an embassy in Havana and restore diplomatic relations resumed after Batista era.
