Five States Phone Union Approves Strike Vote
About 4 300 General Telephone Co. of the Southwest workers approved a union strike petition and gave the president authority to set a date. The company offered increases of up to 73 cents per hour for maintenance and 41 cents for operators over three years, while the union seeks 85 cents for maintenance and 58 cents for operators. The talks followed a broader strike at Southwestern Bell and there was no word from the union or the mediation service since June 4. The company stressed its wage offer ties to living costs and service quality and said it aims to balance employee pay, customer costs, and stockholder returns. Union officials urged a settlement without a strike if possible.
