The American Medical Association disclosed that research has not proven cigarettes cause cancer, heart disease, or other illnesses. An AMA committee, funded partly by a tobacco industry grant, said decades of study may be needed to clarify the relationship and that the evidence remains muddied.
Tens of thousands join the Poor People Campaign in Washington to urge an end to poverty and violence. A clash near the White House involved 20 to 30 youths and several arrests as demonstrators planned the five week action renamed to heal the nation from poverty.
Lubbock city council and the Airport Board approved a basic master plan design for the airport and authorized emergency improvements. Ed Colby warned immediate action is needed to preserve jet service, including terminal expansion design, runway repairs, and an extended east west runway. The council loaned 617000 to match a federal grant and ratified West Texas Air Terminal as the airport name.
A Senate subcommittee endorses prohibiting mail order sales of rifles and shotguns. The move targets non face to face purchases and reduces ease of acquiring firearms through catalogs and similar outlets.

At Ascot England men in business suits debuted but trailed gray tailcoats in the fashion parade. Canadian actress Tandy Cronyn drew the spotlight with a $325 dress and hat.
Rep George Mahon of Lubbock hailed a House Public Works Committee vote to raise interstate authorization from 41,600 to 44,000 miles as a hopeful step toward including Lubbock. He noted Lubbock is the nation’s third largest city not on an interstate and urged Texas seek at least 1,500 more miles for the state.
A three member campus planning committee led by Prof. Haskell Taylor works to present an outline of growth possibilities to the Board of Directors before the fall term. Plans include a new Law School Building at 19th St and Indiana Ave and possible extension of Indiana across campus.
In Albany, Governor Rockefeller secured automatic presidential delegates, while the Democratic Senate race narrowed. Eugene Nickerson led early against Paul O’Dwyer and Robert Resnick as results from 8,091 of 15,408 districts showed O’Dwyer ahead, with Nickerson and Resnick trailing. Polls ran noon to 9 pm statewide and 3 pm to 10 pm in New York City.
President Eisenhower, recovering from a heart attack, was reported to be making very encouraging progress. Doctors at Walter Reed Army Hospital said he spent a very comfortable night and continued to respond well to treatment.
The Texas Legislature advanced liquor by the drink and tax measures during the 50 day special session. Gov. Connally's tax bill aims for 122 million in new revenue while Senate action pushed a 138.2 million general revenue tax plan. Debate highlighted amendments from Sen. Henry Grover and support from Sen. Aikin as House and Senate narrow differences before potential floor votes.
Texas lawmakers hear claims that Commercial Music Co. controls about 400 Fort Worth taverns and 10 percent of debtors have signed leases. bill to regulate vending machine firms and liquor control is sent for further study. An earthquake in Italy caused minor damage with no casualties in Milan and Turin.
U Thant says both sides are escalating the war in Vietnam and that Paris peace talks will be deadlocked for a long time. He cites increased US bombing and Viet Cong raids, urging a three point plan: halt US bombing, scale down fighting, and include all parties in negotiations.
