AMA Says Smoking Not Proven Cause Of Cancer Yet

The American Medical Association disclosed that research has not proven cigarettes cause cancer, heart disease, or other illnesses. An AMA committee, funded partly by a tobacco industry grant, said decades of study may be needed to clarify the relationship and that the evidence remains muddied.

Basic Setup Approved By Council

Lubbock city council and the Airport Board approved a basic master plan design for the airport and authorized emergency improvements. Ed Colby warned immediate action is needed to preserve jet service, including terminal expansion design, runway repairs, and an extended east west runway. The council loaned 617000 to match a federal grant and ratified West Texas Air Terminal as the airport name.

Mahon Reports Highway Chances Growing Brighter

Rep George Mahon of Lubbock hailed a House Public Works Committee vote to raise interstate authorization from 41,600 to 44,000 miles as a hopeful step toward including Lubbock. He noted Lubbock is the nation’s third largest city not on an interstate and urged Texas seek at least 1,500 more miles for the state.

New York Primary Tightens Senate Nomination Fight

In Albany, Governor Rockefeller secured automatic presidential delegates, while the Democratic Senate race narrowed. Eugene Nickerson led early against Paul O’Dwyer and Robert Resnick as results from 8,091 of 15,408 districts showed O’Dwyer ahead, with Nickerson and Resnick trailing.
