Youth Drowns in Palo Duro as Flood Strands 140

A Amarillo youth, Richard Lott, 15, drowned in Palo Duro Creek while playing below Lake Stockton Vail as floods from heavy rains swelled Palo Duro Canyon State Park. About 141 campers were stranded. emergency supplies were flown in. Evacuation planned for morning. water reached five feet in spots and fell to four by night.

Bus Crash Kills Girl En Route to Church Convention

A chartered Kerrville Bus Co. bus carrying 35 girls and five adults to a church convention overturned on a rain slick highway in east Harris County Texas killing Gail Griffin 10 and injuring 22 others. The bus struck a bridge abutment after fishtailing, throwing Gail from the vehicle.

President Kennedy Holds Talks With Clergy and Lawmakers

President Kennedy met with congressional leaders and about 250 religious figures to seek ways to ease racial tensions. Senator Dirksen forecast areas of agreement with the administration on civil rights proposals to be outlined to Congress. The interfaith committee proposal aimed at community by community progress. The funeral of Medgar Evers proceeded in Arlington as 500 mourners attended. Demonstrations occurred in Englewood led by Roy Wilkins against school desegregation.

Deportee Arrested After Prison Escape Linked to Huntsville

In Brownsville Texas a man identified as Herbert Loy Jr using the alias L H Walker was arrested after crossing the Rio Grande while being deported from Mexico as an undesirable alien. Loy admitted he was an escaped prisoner from Huntsville state prison after walking away from John Sealy Hospital in Galveston in 1953 while there for plastic surgery.

Seven Die In Tragedy In Ulster County

A 44-year-old woman, Elizabeth Gregor of Prospect, shot her husband Joseph and five children, then killed herself by trigger string. The family home was found by Coroner Clinton Atwell after his arrival following a call from Mrs. Gregor who offered no reason for the mass slayings.
