Coed Slain On Campus in Chapel Hill Garden

Suellen Evans a 21 year old UNC student was stabbed to death in a botanical garden near the campus center. Police described a dark armed suspect seen fleeing toward Davie Hall and a blue shirt worn by a Negro youth. Bloodhounds failed to locate a scent and Evans died before medical help arrived.

Companies Union Split Over Wages

The United Steelworkers Union served notice of a Sept. 1 strike after rejecting an informal wage offer. USW aims for a 17.9 cent hourly raise, arguing the industry should raise wages beyond 2 percent annual productivity gains. No resumption date set. 450,000 union members at stake.

Lubbock Bid Among Cities To Host Atom Smasher

Lubbock and about 200 cities in 45 states bid to host the world’s largest atom smasher. The Atomic Energy Commission is to announce its recommended locations week of August 1 with final decisions by December 1. The complex would cover a square mile, cost about 348 million to build and at least 50 million annually to operate.

Miss Waco's Singing Takes Talent Honors

Carol Frances Wyatt Miss Waco won the final round preliminary talent competition in the Miss Texas pageant. The 21 year old Baylor senior sang a medley including Lady of Spain and the Girl from Ipanema. Swimsuit winner in the final round was Nancy Lynn Haralson Miss Big Spring. Miss Texas will be selected tonight.

UT coeds found dead in field near Dallas
