Clues sought in a coed slaying as cold weather grips the state. The paper notes a wide array of items from theater tours to campus events and national news, highlighting ongoing investigations and political developments.
President Johnson summoned United Nations Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg to his Texas ranch to discuss U N mediation efforts for Viet Nam. Goldberg arrived by Air Force jetstar and joined the President at his lake cabin as U Thant's peace proposal circulated.
Autumn like weather settled across the region with cool July readings in Lubbock and other South Plains towns. A freak 30 minute hailstorm at Ruidosa damaged aircraft, closed the airport, and canceled races while Colorado faced more floods and high water.
Two University of Texas coeds Susan Rigsby and Shirley Ann Stark were found dead, both victims of possible strangulation. Autopsy cites unclear cause for Stark and confirms strangulation for Rigsby. No arrests reported as inquest and pathological tests proceed. Bodies released to Dallas families for funeral services Monday.
Florentino Quinones 37 a Dimmitt farm worker died 10 hours after a butane tank burn. His brother Cruz Quinones of Pahrump Nev is hospitalized in serious condition after a tractor accident. Quinones Jr 7 suffered second degree burns on his arm. The Hackleman farm east of Dimmitt saw a tank flame injure Florentino and ignite a barn fire.
A rescue party on Panay Island reports all 36 aboard the Philippine Airlines plane died in the crash 5 000 feet up the mountain. The airliner went down last Sunday with no survivors.
Secretary of Labor Wirtz won union approval to end the six week ship strike but operators balked at the proposal. Talks will resume Monday on Manning and automation disputes as AFL-CIO leaders push Meany to set resolution procedures while engineers demand no strike during a four year accord and subsidies are in play.
Ted J. Sheehan a weather forecaster in Lubbock has spent five years crafting a device he calls a tornado chamber to produce miniature two foot tornadoes and other weather phenomena. He aims to prove theories about two kinds of tornado funnels while continuing his weather research and tinkering in his garage at 5406 46th St. in a busman's holiday.
A forecaster discusses a tornado machine mounted on wooden legs and designed to reproduce the strong suction on the updraft side of a funnel cloud. He notes observing tornadoes with a downdraft on one flank and intense suction drawing debris upward on the opposite side, hoping the device can replicate that effect. A state security tribunal in Amman sentenced two Jordanian soldiers to death and another to life in prison for spying for Israel and aiding Israeli forces during a border raid. Five Jordanian civilians were killed in the clash.
In Americus Georgia five Black demonstrators were wounded as clashes erupted near the funeral of Andrew A Whatley 21 a Marine recruit killed by a passing car. Police troopers escorted demonstrators to the Sumter County Courthouse while state patrol increased presence from 100 to 130.
A Wisconsin civil rights worker, 21, was treated for head cuts from a pistol blow during a supermarket incident in which several Negroes were slugged. A witness described fists striking people as a racially mixed crowd was involved in an earlier picketing attempt at another supermarket. The event occurred amid tense demonstrations and store tempo.
A young mother, Mrs. Alexis Powell of Yuba City, appeared to die during an emergency operation after a crash. Surgeons stopped her heart for 10 minutes to repair a two inch tear in the right atrial wall, then restarted and she survived with a crushed chest and injuries.
An 18 year old from Nacogdoches Mary Lou Butler won Miss Texas at a four day pageant. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Nolan Butler and will be a Stephen F Austin State College sophomore. First runner up was Miss Fort Worth Marion Wilkinson. Butler will compete in Atlantic City for Miss America and receives a $1000 scholarship a $2000 modeling course a Casa Manana contract and other prizes.
