Four teenage members of two farm families were killed when a Louisville and Nashville train struck the rear of their car at a rural crossing near Mount Vernon Indiana. Dale Esche 17 drove Sharon 14 Betty Schreiber 17 and Paula Schreiber 15 to a corn field when the collision sent the car into a ditch. The front cleared the tracks but the locomotive struck the right rear corner, flipping the car and killing all four occupants.
