JFK Urges Acceptance Of A Test Ban Pact

President Kennedy urged acceptance of a limited nuclear test ban with Russia as an important first step toward peace while warning the agreement is not a cure for East West conflict. He urged four powers including France to prevent spread of nuclear weapons and said the U S would maintain necessary strength despite the ban. He warned against complacency and noted US detection capabilities to catch violations.

Castro Assails U S in Havana Rally

Premier Fidel Castro accused the United States of swindling Cuba out of 10 million dollars in ransom goods and vowed confiscation of the U S Embassy. He mocked Kennedy and urged Latin American revolt as he spoke for over three hours at the Plaza de la Revolucion, backed by the Soviet bloc. The crowd heard a defiant, aggressive attack amid Cuba’s ongoing tension with Washington.

Aluminum Firms Agree to 10-Week Vacation Plan

Major aluminum producers and the AFL-CIO United Steelworkers reached a new contract covering over 50,000 employees in 55 plants. The accord, effective through June 1, 1965, includes a 10 week vacation every two years and three extra weeks pay in one year out of five, with no wage increase.

Dope Verdict Yields 25 Year Term In Marijuana Case

Richard Mora Gonzales 25 of Plainview was found guilty of possession of marijuana and given a 25 year prison term. It marks a second 25 year sentence in a local marijuana case in recent months. In the same session, Willie Edmond Jackson 33 of Lubbock received six years for armed robbery, to run concurrently with a separate six year sentence for another Lubbock robbery.

Water Depletion Tax Rebate Faces Appeal

The High Plains Underground Water Conservation District seeks a federal appeal to a verdict allowing a Petersburg farmer to obtain an income tax refund for water depletion. Government attorneys filed the appeal at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

Actress Marie McDonald pleads guilty in Percodan case

Guilty plea entered by actress Marie McDonald in a drug case. She was released on 525 dollars bail and faces sentencing August 23 by Municipal Judge Francis Cochran. Prosecutor B J H Blanchard charged two prescriptions were forged to obtain percodan at Encino and Sherman Oaks pharmacies.

Suit Filed To Block Abstractor's Funds In California

A temporary injunction was granted to freeze accounts controlled by Lubbock abstractor J. W. Wilson in three banks. District Judge Rob ert H. Rean issued the order Friday, reported by Kenneth May of the Avalanche Journal staff.

Fort Worth Firm Sues Wilson for 116000 in California Bank Action

Elliott and Waldron Title and Guaranty Co. of Fort Worth seek an accounting from Wilson and Wilson Abstract Co. The suit filed last week cites a California bank where Wilson reportedly had 16023 on deposit. A temporary injunction covers funds in American State Bank and Plains National Bank in Lubbock and First National Bank of Seagraves with over 52000 noted on deposit.

Hale Center man dies after highway work accident

John Harris 27 a Texas Highway Department inspector and Plainview resident was struck by a tandem truck while setting stakes for a surveying crew on U S Highway 87 eight miles south of Hale Center. He died at High Hains Hospital 45 minutes after the 2:30 p.m. incident. Harris married to Marie Harris survived by wife and parents.
