Wisconsin Runs Its Own Insurance Fund Draws Fire
Wisconsin remains the only state operating a public life insurance fund since 1911. About 7,518 policyholders hold $41.5 million in force with dividends around $500,000 this year. Critics call it socialism, saying government competition hurts private agents. Seven policy types exist for residents with no advertising due to lack of funds. Growth surged from 1959 to 1967, aided by quick cash value and immediate dividends.
