Fireman Scrambles as His Own Truck Flare Hits

A car fire Wednesday afternoon near the Central Fire station endangered Fireman David McMath whose pickup held trash and fishing gear. Fire spread from sunlit debris in the back, burning tackle and a tire, just feet from the station.

Texas high court allows county redistricting beyond one man one vote

The Texas Supreme Court ruled population need not be the sole factor when redrawing county commissioners districts. It said voters' numbers, land area geography road mileage and taxable value may all influence lines. The decision, in a Midland case, marks a shift from the one man one vote doctrine in local districts.

Houston eyes air conditioned downtown mall plan

City officials propose enclosing and air conditioning 14 blocks around Texas and Main streets to create a seven block mall with three level cooling, balcony shops, open air restaurants, and a 500000 square foot expansion aimed at drawing tourists like Times Square. Space Hall of Fame plans reveal mall and theaters

A proposed Space Hall of Fame project includes a $6.6 million music hall and a $2 million theater with a city hall and courthouse. Buffalo Bull Sighted Near Jayton Sparks Old West Tales

Mrs. Bill McLaury reported a 1500 pound buffalo at the Brazos River Bridge five miles north of Clairemont then it moved south to the old O O Ranch. Sheriff Bob Gallagher photographed the shaggy intruder from 20 feet away. Cowboys near Motley Hall county line had previously captured the animal on May 4.

Deaths Mount In Heat Wave and Storms Across Nation

A blistering heat wave and violent storms pushed the national death toll past 90 as tornadoes and windstorms damaged property from the Middle West to New England. In St Louis 68 deaths were blamed on heat, with 106 degrees recorded. outbreaks damaged airports, homes, and vehicles across several states.

Budget Set by WAIN MILLER for 1966-67 School Year

Popeville school trustees approved a 16.6 million dollar budget for 1966-67 by a 4 to 1 vote with no tax rate change after a public hearing. Four people attended the hearing which included a philosophical debate and a split vote. A. Doyle Justice opposed the budget citing a 110 thousand dollar dip into reserves. James R. Cochran moved to adopt, supported by Dr. James M. Reynolds, Bill Kingsberg, and James H. White. Watson Carlock and J. Owen Gilbreath were absent.

Sinatra Engaged to Mia Farrow in London Wedding Planned

Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow announced their engagement after a two year romance. The couple plans a wedding between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
