Tragic Heat Toll In Car Left With Windows Up

Three toddlers died after being left in a hot car for about three hours in West Hollywood. Geraldine Luke, mother, had sold blood earlier and returned to find Joseph 18 months Barbara 34 months and James 40 years unconscious. Firefighters could not revive them as outside temps reached 90 and interior car heat may have hit 130 degrees.

Dallas Fort Worth Opposes Trinity River Water Plan

The Dallas Fort Worth area resisted the Texas Water Development Board plan for the Trinity River basin. At Arlington State College about 200 people heard arguments on the 3.7 billion project featuring six new reservoirs and 23 existing or planned structures. Dallas contends the plan requires huge expenditures with unclear benefit to the region and questions who pays for exported water.

Man falls to death at Loop 289 overpass in Lubbock

Juan Navarrette 28 of Lubbock construction worker for E. M. Bailey Construction Co died after falling from the Loop 289 overpass over the Brownfield Highway. He was dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital about 5:45 p.m. Justice of the Peace F R Land ruled the cause was a broken neck. Funeral services are pending.

Refurbish Courthouse Or Else Judge Demands Major Upgrades

UPI reports from La Porte Indiana that Judge Alban M. Smith ordered county leaders to spend 206900 for courthouse work. The 19 page mandate seeks new plumbing air conditioning a rebuilt probation area an 8000 volume library conference rooms restrooms and an elevator replacing a 58 year old lift. Officials must sign contracts within 30 days with 10 day progress reports. The judge cited a grand jury urging proper facilities to maintain law and order noting courtrooms have not been cleaned or decorated in 33 years.

Allies Press Air War and Ground Actions in South Vietnam

Early Truce Not Likely

Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara warned there are no signs of an early end to the Vietnam War as North Vietnam shows no willingness to negotiate. He said U S forces may grow beyond 280000 this year, possibly reaching 350000, with annual defense spending around 1 billion dollars and further cuts planned in aerial munitions to avoid postwar surplus.
