Commerce Department survey predicts 1969 output rise similar to 1968 with over half of major firms expecting at least a 5 percent gain. Telephone and telegraph, computer, railroad freight, and consumer goods like mobile homes and air conditioning lead gains. 109 groups surveyed show varied outlooks.
The U S Command announced two large operations in Vietnam, a Marine Vietnamese push near Khe Sanh uncovering an enemy munitions dump and a Russian truck, and a joint Army Navy sweep in the Plain of Reeds west of Saigon finding five arms caches with about 50 000 rounds. Both efforts began Thursday with limited enemy resistance and aimed to steady areas seldom probed by allies.

A horse and rider caused a crash Sunday at 5 10 p m on Loop 289 near Bangor Avenue. John A Grimm 28 of 906 Dover drove east and stopped to let them pass. The horse ran into the car left rear panel causing $100 damage. The rider received a ticket for negligent collision by failing to yield the right of way.
Moscow reports the Venus 5 spacecraft launched toward Venus in a 155 million mile mission. Tass says it will reach Venus by mid May for atmospheric data and a gentle descent after orbiting Earth and Africa launch.
Five youngsters ages 3 to 13 died in a bedroom fire in a two bedroom apartment on Chicago's west side. The parents escaped unharmed as firefighters battled the blaze for about 30 minutes. The victims were Victor 3 Sarah 4 Elaine 6 Benny 7 and Betty Ann 13, children of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Gray.
