State School Probe Reports Abuse at Gatesville Unit

Texas Rep Vernon Stewart announced a critical report to be delivered to Texas Youth Council commissioners after a seven member delegation inspected the Gatesville State School for Boys. Focused on the Mountain View maximum security unit, the probe followed an on the spot inquiry into alleged beatings and abuse of youths. The leaders finished the tour hours before departing for Austin.

Auto mishap fatal to mill worker sparks Texas Youth Council probe

A 21 year old mill laborer died when his car crashed near a median light in Northeast Lubbock. Legislators probing conditions at the Texas Youth Council rose to requests for a full inquiry. Eddie Keller Richard Vargas Kenneth Coward Earl Dice were among youths discussed as officials planned further action and possible press conferences. The department declined immediate comment. FTC Proposes Rules After Crackdown On Retail Games

Boeing 727 Crashes in London Fog at Gatwick

A Ariana Airlines Boeing 727 from Kabul via Frankfurt crashed into a house near Gatwick in dense fog early Sunday. Forty two people, including three house occupants, are feared dead. fifteen survivors were rushed to hospitals. Firefighters battled the blaze as wreckage and bodies were scattered across a wide area. the airport remained closed.

Off-Duty Officer Fatally? Shooting in Lubbock Parking Lot

A Dallas man was shot in the back by an off duty officer acting as a security guard at a Montgomery Ward store parking lot in southwest Lubbock. The victim was in serious condition in Methodist Hospital ICU after the 12 45 p.m. incident. A 59 year old man in a waiting car was arrested on felony theft investigation. A store manager called for an ambulance. The incident began when the suspect tried to flee after being confronted about shoplifting a drill.

South Plains records first traffic death of year

L M Connally of 1314 E 17th St died at the scene about 2 20 a m after his car veered onto the median and struck a steel light pole. His body lay atop fallen electrical lines and the top half was burning when responders arrived. Connally, a Plains Cotton Oil Mill employee, sustained a crushed skull and other injuries. Arrangements were pending at South Plains Funeral Home.
