Sheriff Withdrawal Arouses Interest in Lubbock County Races

Friday night Tom Abel announced his withdrawal from reelection as sheriff. Grady Haerrist, former deputy and ex police chief, announced his candidacy for sheriff Saturday morning. Mrs. Royal Furgeson seeks an elective term as district clerk after a wartime appointment. C L Harris announced for Congress in the 1911 district. Several precincts see jockeying for county and justice of the peace seats as poll taxes rise to an all time high near 11,487 by Saturday night.

Fifty Italians Executed in Milan Reprisal

Diplomatic quarters report that fifty Italian prisoners, many loyal to Marshal Badoglio, were executed by Germans in Milan as retaliation for the assassination of Milan’s police chief. The item notes the wartime bond promotion attached to the dispatch.

Farm Meeting Set Here February 1

A Texas Farm Bureau federation meeting to discuss 1944 agricultural issues is planned at the Lubbock hotel on Friday February 11 at 10 a m.
