Former Lubbock Man Killed in Houston
W. L. Ragland, 44, formerly of Lubbock, was struck by a car and killed Friday night in downtown Houston. He lived in Dallas and Houston since leaving Lubbock about 15 years ago and was a barber. Survived by his mother Mrs. G. W. Ragland and six brothers including Clyde, Lee, and Oscar Ragland. Funeral plan tentatively set at Sanders Funeral Home with body to arrive in Lubbock today.

Soldier Says Ballot Is Wanted Overseas
Sgt. Alfred Perry of Providence Rhode Island who just returned from New Zealand believes a majority of soldiers overseas would vote if given an opportunity. He notes interest among fellow servicemen in voting while abroad and supports a plan to draft labor as a good idea. Perry is at McCloskey General Hospital after sustaining back injuries when a tree fell on him during a bulldozer incident.

Local Youth Council to Meet Monday Night
A called meeting of the Gubbock Youth council is set for Monday at 7:30 in the district courtroom. All representatives and interested youth are urged to attend. Capt. Lloyd W. Rosser, brother of Mrs. Joe L. Reed, arrived in San Francisco on leave after 18 months in the Southwest Pacific and will visit Reed and his aunt in Lubbock. Lt. Douglas Lemmel of Seattle, husband of former Lubbock girl Miss Josephine McLarty, was killed in a mid air collision at Keyfield Mississippi on Jan. 26. funeral planned in Seattle. Lieutenant Lemmel’s sister and brothers in Lubbock will return for the arrangements. Lt. Earl Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Walker, has reported to duty as navigator on a transport plane on the West Coast and is living in Alameda, California. The Navy and War departments announced armed service assignments and casualties from West Texas and eastern New Mexico, including WIA cases and missing sailors. Odie McAfee of Sulphur Springs, R J Sessums of Dimmitt and Tahoka, and W. E. Owens of Tahoka face Feb. 14 grand jury action after bond set at 1000 dollars for theft of threshed grain from farmer E. C. Hughes.

Giant Turnip Grown On Lubbock Farm As Proof Of Dryland Profit
W C McCelvey of Lub bock reports a giant eight and a half pound turnip grown on M A Jarvis farm four and one half miles southeast of Lubbock on the Tahoka highway. He claims it may be the largest turnip in the state as proof that dryland farming can be profitable despite sandy soil and lack of irrigation. Jarvis feeds many such turnips to his stock.
