Mrs. Marion Leftwich of the Lubbock Garden Club recalls how early settlers on the South Plains coped with scarce evergreens. Stories recount cowboys buying ribbons for horse-neck decorations and a cedar tree hauled from Hale County in 1883, with community trees common from the 1800s to the 1920s.
