Navy fires head coach Bill Elias after 1968 season

At Annapolis the Naval Academy terminated 45 year old Bill Elias as head football coach after a 2-8 season. Capt. J O Coppedge said the contract was not renewed to improve Navy's record, with no successor named and no current staff to be retained. Elias attributed the 1968 struggles to losing quarterbacks Cartwright and Hardin and early injuries. He plans no immediate move but seeks another head coaching job if offered.
