The 22nd annual Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Home Christmas Lighting Contest opens with 108 entries, up from 102 last year. A new Continuous Groupings Division features neighborhood groups, including a 34 foot 7 inch tree between 3012 and 3010 21st St decorated by about 11 children with 1500 tin can lids.

Hijacked TWA Jet Forcibly Detours to Havana Cuba
A Trans World Airlines Boeing 727 bound for Miami from Nashville was hijacked by a young Negro gunman with 39 aboard. The jet landed at Jose Marti Airport in Havana where crew and hijacker were released after eight hours. Passengers were bused to Varadero for return charter to Miami. Aboard were golf pro Mason Rudolph and country star Tex Ritter. Fidel Castro has not replied to U S demands for prosecution.
