Georgia wrecking yard to be beautified under federal program

Willie Hicks, operator of a Conyers area wrecking yard on Interstate 20, learns his yard will be screened with trees shrubs and vines under the federal highway beautification program. The project costs about 2500 dollars and could be a national first. Hicks has run the yard since 1950 and houses around 500 cars.

Wreck Kills Seven Of Hart Family In Hale County Crash

A head on collision on State Hwy 194 ten miles northwest of Plainview killed seven members of a Hart Community migrant family and seriously injured four others. The dead were Melecio Cordova Martinez 58 Anastacio Guana 28, Francisca Cordova Guana 27, Ramiro Guana 7, Sylvia Guana 6, Ray Guana 4 months, and Anita Cordova 18. Four seriously injured were Rodolfo Rangel 19 Antonio Oliverez 16 Marcelino Gonzales 21 Martha Cortez 18. The crash occurred about 1 15 p m as both cars traveled east bound. The scene was described as one of Hale County's worst accidents. Investigators Curtis Pray and George Webb noted both cars were demolished and the wreckage hindered the rescue. The family had been living in Hart Community for about two months with permanent address Route 1 Linton.

Witness recalls crash like war zone scene near Hart

Martin Garza and Levy Dickerson witnessed a violent head on collision 11 miles northwest of Hart that killed seven members of a Latin American family from Hart. The wreck on State Hwy 194 left twisted car frames and a dust cloud as Dickerson called for an ambulance. Six bodies were found at the scene. further details on Page 14.

Jury Frees Slain Minister Suspects in Selma Case

An all white jury in Selma acquitted three white men of murdering Rev. James Reed, a Boston-born Unitarian minister linked to civil rights work. The courtroom erupted with applause from whites while Black onlookers groaned as Judge Moore dismissed the Separate Verdicts. Reed and two fellow ministers were attacked amid racial tensions driving the case.
