Stargazer satellite soars to orbit amid NASA launch optimism

CAPE KENNEDY A huge stargazer satellite blasted from Cape Kennedy atop an Atlas Centaur rocket and reached a near perfect orbit. The $75 million OAO 2 carries 11 telescopes and aims to unveil ultraviolet light from young stars to study stellar evolution and the origin of the universe.

Six Die In Silsbee Truck Wagon Crash

In Silsbee Texas six people die when a log truck and a station wagon collide on Farm Road 418 within the city limits. Mrs Gerline Hooks Lusk 34 and her five sons and nephews perish. Ben Reed the truck driver is slightly injured. Reed says the wagon appeared to blow a tire and veered into the path of his loaded vehicle. Bodies lie at a convalescent home roadside.

Coast Guard Cutter Collision on Mississippi River

A freighter and Coast Guard vessel collided on the Mississippi near White Castle Louisiana. Seventeen Coast Guard crewmen were missing in cold swift water while three were rescued and in good condition. Rescue efforts involved Army Corps of Engineers boats Coast Guard aircraft and local sheriffs. The Helena anchored after the collision and sustained minor damage. The White Alder based in New Orleans sank almost immediately.

Crash injures Texas Tech students on Slide Road

Two Texas Tech students were injured when their car struck a steel utility pole and overturned on Slide Road shortly after 11 p.m. The unnamed girl was believed to be in serious condition, while the boy sustained no serious injuries. They were taken to Methodist Hospital.
